Wood ants nest.

This weekend I traveled to a town called Sösdala, in Sweden. I stayed in a cottage of a Danish family that is very dear to me, with mormor (grandmother), adorable danish børn (children) and a friend hund (dog), Samson.

At dawn, the sun's rays awaken the boreal forest, passing trees clad in ice crystals, immersed in white light and silence. The landscapes were a mixture of green colors (of conifers, mosses and lichens) and white (frost on vegetation and bare trees).

As I walked in the woods, I felt the greatest serenity, it becomes more quiet in winter, as if time has stopped. The critters are sleeping in sheltered burrows, and my biologist encounters are with mushrooms and some avifauna, blue tits; nuthatches; woodpeckers (aka Frederik's); and raptors. Then there are also "uninhabited" encounters, frozen spider webs and ant nests (Formica rufa), incredible buildings with galleries full of tunnels.

We visited lots of friends, including chickens, sheep, pigs and horses, and we went to Hovdala slott, a castle. It was so cold that a very high ice sheath had formed in the water, and thus, I walked on my first frozen lake!
The littlest one, Rebecca, is very sweet and has the cutest cheeks. She is so independent for everything except for walking which she is not too fond of, so she was riding everywhere in an old wooden cart.
At night, tired from so many walks, we landed on the sofa together around the fireplace, in a hygge mode, and made puzzles; In the woods the boars, deer and foxes woke up under the starry night of Scandinavia to start their day. The next day, the temperature rose a little and the ice began to melt falling and returning to the earth.
